Whilst the Ford Escort may seem a rather utilitarian vehicle it is in fact on of the best selling and most famous cars ever produced by Ford; the Escort is a true workhorse that has gone from strength to strength in Europe and the US. Between 1967 and 2003 an Escort was in production in one form or another, there were some Ford Anglia Escort cars before this but the first true Ford Escort was launched in 1967 and first shown properly at the Brussels Motor Show the following year. The long running and much loved Anglia was replaced by the new Ford Escort so it had an existing legacy to live up to. As soon as it was launched in the UK it was a major success, and whilst it also proved to sell well in Europe the UK market seemingly fell in love with the Ford Escort with two million cars being sold in the six years since the car was first introduced, something that had never been accomplished outside of the US before.

The first model of Ford Escort was a rear wheel drive car that came with a choice of manual or three speed automatic transmissions. The suspension was relatively simple for the time consisting of leaf springs and a live axle, however this helped reduce maintenance on the vehicle. The first version of the Ford Escort also represented a very unique styling that was iconic of the period and loved by many. The first version of the Ford Escort was a two door saloon car available with various levels of trim, however in 1968 an estate version was introduced to the market along with a van one month later. Finally Ford added a full four door saloon in 1969 making the Escort even more versatile. There was a wide choice of engines available for the first model of Ford Escort, from 1.1 to 1.3 in various tunings and with various modifications. This first Ford Escort proved to be an incredible success and went on to pave the way for subsequent generations.

The most modern version of the Ford Escort was the 1995 revision that offered some changes over the previous model. The new Ford Escorts featured a completely re-styled and redesigned bonnet, light fixtures, new bumpers, new mirrors, new handles and a choice of different radiator grilles. The interior of the vehicle was almost completely brand new with a new instrument layout. Ford also took great care to improve the road handling and comfort with the new Escort, better suspension ensured that the ride was smoother on the standard models, whilst the more sporty versions of the vehicle featured stiffer suspension for racing. The last RS Ford Escort was discontinued in 1996, and the RS logo would remain unused until 2002 when the new Focus was released. Ford were determined that the Escort could still sell so they developed and released a new Ghia X version in 1996 that included many luxuries such as air conditioning as standard. The announcement of the Focus in 1998 did not end the older vehicle entirely, the Ford Escort van continued being produced right through until 2002.
