The Ford Cougar was developed with the sole purpose of being a sports coupe that would be sold and marketed in Europe. When Ford first announced the Cougar many were left wondering why a niche currently occupied by the higher end Mondeos needed to be filled with another vehicle from the same company, regardless Ford went ahead with the Cougar and it was launched in 1998. Originally it was designed to be named the Probe and replace the older version of the vehicle with the same name, however it was renamed and a new vehicle was born. This new car represented the third attempt from Ford to break into the sports coupe market in Europe after the Capri and the Probe.
The basis for the Cougar engineering wise was the Ford Mondeo, many components were taken from the existing vehicle in order to aid reliability and add a sense of uniformity across the range. When the Ford Cougar was reviewed many were positive but others were negative with the car seeming to divide peoples opinions. A choice of 22.0
litre 16 valve Zetec or 2.5 litre 25 valve Duratec V6 emphasised that nature of the vehicle and other things that were extras on other cars were included as standard such as 16" alloy wheels. Some reviewers described the Cougar as a real drivers car, despite this the vehicle did not sell well.
Ford released an "X Pack" for the vehicle that provided some major updates to the interior including new upholstery, heated front seats, a six position electronically moveable drivers seat and also a brand new stereo with CD-changer. It is believed that only 12,000 units of the Cougar were sold in the UK and Ford decided to discontinue the vehicle just four years after it was released in 2002. Despite the negative reviews many motorists found an affinity for the Ford Cougar and there are still some on the roads today.
