The Ford Cougar is an intriguing vehicle that represents Ford's attempt to once again break into the European market with a sports coupe car. Strangely the Cougar also shares a niche with an existing vehicle from Ford; namely the higher rated models of Mondeo. The Cougar was first released in 1998 and although it was originally intended to be a new Probe it was given its own name and re-christened into the Ford Cougar. This would be Fords first major attempt to break into the sporty coupe market in Europe after the Capri, a car which proved to be a timeless classic and a major success.
The Cougar, however, did not sell anywhere near as well as the Ford Capri. The initial basis for its design was the Mondeo and it was launched to a mixed bag of reviews, some positive, others negative. The Ford Cougar was available with a choice of engines, either a 2.0
litre 16 valve Zetec or a 2.5 litre 25 valve Duratec V6, and various sports fittings like alloy wheels were included as standard on all released versions of the car. Many reviewers who scratched beneath the surface actually felt that the Cougar was a triumph of a motor vehicle; some even praised it as being a true "drivers car". Despite this the vehicle continued to sell poorly.
Ford released an "X pack" update that changed the interior with new upholstery and furnishings, a more powerful and up to date stereo and also heated front seats and a drivers seat that featured six electronically adjusted positions. It is estimated that only 12,000 units of the Ford Cougar were sold in the United Kingdom and the vehicle was eventually discontinued in 2002. Many industry experts have pointed out that this was just as BMW were seeing a resurgence in popularity and they had all but cornered the market with the 3 Series.
