The Ford Cougar is somewhat unique; it was a car designed to be sold in the European market and as a large coupe it occupied a space in the industry also taken up by the Mondeo from the same company. It was launched in 1998 and was originally destined to be a new Probe but eventually the Probe name was dropped and it became the Ford Cougar. This was actually the first real attempt from Ford to produce a sporty coupe car in Europe after the incredible success of the Capri, unfortunately the Cougar would not sell anywhere near as many units as the Capri had done for Ford in the past.
The design basis for the Cougar came from the Ford Mondeo and when it was launched reviews were very mixed with the new design and styling proving divisive with some loving it and others hating it. The standard choice of engines for the Ford Cougar ranged from the 2.0 litre 16 valve Zetec and the 2.5 litre 25 valve Duratec V6, and in order to emphasis the sporty nature of the vehicle 16" alloys came as standard on all models. When reviewers looked at how well the car drives many were surprised, the Ford Cougar has been described as a true drivers car but despite this it still did not sell well.
There was also a "X pack" available that upgraded the interior with a new stereo and better upholstery along with heated front seats and electronically adjusted driver seat. Despite some favourable reviews reports estimate that only 12,000 cars were sold in the UK and the car was discontinued in 2002. Many argue that the runaway success of the BMW 3 Series was responsible for the failure of the Ford Cougar, regardless it is still loved and driven but some of the motorists that purchased one when they were still in production.
