The Ford Corsair was first released at the 1963 London Motor Show and it was eagerly awaited by many. When it was released for general sale to the public 12 months after it was displayed at the show it immediately polarised opinion, some people loved it and some hated it. Regardless, it went on to sell well for six solid years until 1970 under the guise of both saloon and estate cars along with some third party modified convertible versions. One of these convertible models of the Ford Corsair (the Crayford modified version) is actually a much sought after collectors edition and when one is offered for sale it usually fetches a very high price.
The Ford Corsair takes a lot of its basic engineering from the Mk1 Cortina however it's design inspiration clearly came from the American classic the Thunderbird. This is the main reason that people either loved or hated the Ford Corsair so much, many felt that the unique stylings really set the car apart in the UK whilst others felt the fusion of American classic and British family car was not so successful. The Ford Corsair was powered by a 1.5 litre 60 horsepower engine however this proved to be just a starting block and when it was in production various new engines were offered for sale in the vehicle. These new V4 engines once again divided opinion with many praising their power but others criticising them for running roughly.
In 1966 Ford updated the Corsair with the addition of a brand new estate model, and they also introduced a model aimed squarely at the executive market that featured increased fittings and comfort inside the vehicle. The Ford Corsair proved to be very popular with people who were not afraid of modifying their own vehicles; thanks to a slow top speed and acceleration many people chose to improve their own Corsairs with various modifications that helped boost the popularity of the vehicle. By 1970 when it was replaced by the Cortina and Capri the Ford Corsair had sold 310,000 units and had gained a legion of fans.
