Ford CorsairThe Ford Corsair is a mid sized vehicle that was unveiled to the public and worlds press at the 1963 London Motor Show. It was first offered for sale just one year later and had a run of six years until 1970. The Ford Corsair was sold as both saloon and estate versions and third party Crayford also developed a convertible version that is now a classic icon of the era and fetches a high price at auction. The two door version of the Ford Corsair is also very rare as it was only available for a limited time in the UK. The basis for the Ford Corsair was taken from the Mk1 Cortina and many components were taken from this vehicle as well.

The Ford Corsair polarised opinion when it was released; some loved the unique and bold styling choices the design made and others hated them, with the non too subtle nods of the Thunderbird proving both a turn on and a turn off depending on your particular point of view. Initially a 1.5 litre 60 horsepower Kent engine was offered for sale to power the Ford Corsair, however various new engines were added to the series in 1965 with a choice of V4 engines being options right up to 2.0 litre versions. In 1966 Ford decided to upgrade the Corsair range with a new estate version of the vehicle, and the next year they also produced an executive model that featured much more luxurious fixtures and fittings.

Although the performance of the Corsair (even with the larger engine options) proved to be less than amazing it actually prompted many fans of the shape of the car to produce various tweaks and mods that were nothing to do with the original Ford design but aimed to improve performance. In 1970 the Ford Corsair was replaced by the newest version of the Cortina with the Capri replacing the GT models, however the vehicle proved a success with 310,000 Corsairs being built. In Australia the Ford Corsair was revitalised somewhat; between 1989 and 1992 the name was used on a new version of the Nissan Pintara that was designed to replace the Mazda 626/Ford Telstar.
