The Ford Consul proved to be a timeless classic that many people enjoyed driving in its various incarnations. The Ford Consul was developed and designed just to be sold in the UK market and when it was first launched in the early 1950's it was well received by the public and many people purchased one. The Mk1 version of the Ford Consul was first unveiled to the press and public at the London Motor Show in 1950 and it represented a direct replacement for the popular V8 Pilot. The Pilot sold exceptionally well but was only sold in small numbers and this prevented Ford from breaking into the family saloon market, hence they created the Consul. The Mk1 Ford Consul was available with a 1508 cc engine and came with a three speed gearbox and
MacPherson strut front suspension, and it was comfortably appointed inside.
Ford had created in the Consul the perfect version with which to use to enter the family saloon market, and they decided that a Mk2 version of the vehicle was called for. One of the first things Ford did was to extend the wheelbase of their new Consul, and they also fitted a more powerful 1703 cc 59 bhp engine along with a new design on both the inside and outside of the vehicle. The roof profile of the new Ford Consul was lowered somewhat and this had the effect of improving the speed and acceleration of the vehicle, and Ford also introduced a number of new technology into the Mk2 Consul such as disc brakes (at first an optional extra but later available as standard). There was also a two tone colour schemed deluxe version made available for sale.
The Ford Consul was revived somewhat as a modified version of the Granada in the 70's, the new Ford Consul Granada was unveiled as a new option in the Granada range. This new vehicle was available with a choice of 1996 cc and 2495 cc engines and Ford also developed and released a GT version of the Consul Granada that featured a 138 bhp V6 engine and a stripped interior devoid of various luxuries. These weight saving measures improved performance considerably and the car proved to be very popular with those who desired performance more than comfort.
