Ford ConsulThe Ford Consul is a car that holds a special place in the hearts of many people, in the 1950's the Consul was a very popular vehicle on UK roads and it proved to be a popular car from Ford. It was sold just in the UK and the first finished Ford Consul was showed off to an eagerly awaiting crowd at the London Motor Show in 1950. With the Consul Ford attempted to make their mark on the on the family saloon market; the car was intended to replace the V8 Pilot that sold well but was only produced in small quantities. When the Consul first graced the roads Ford were keen to demonstrate just how up to date and modern the design was, the 1508 cc 47 bhp engine, three speed synchromesh gearbox and unique front suspension all added an air of futurism to the design.

By 1956 Ford decided that the Consul was selling so well that a Mk2 version was warranted. This new version of the popular vehicle featured a much more powerful 1703 cc 59 bhp engine and a completely new interior, and the exterior was also re-styled as well. The roof profile of the new Mk2 Ford Consul was lowered (the vehicle was more aerodynamic as a result of this) and any new technologies available to the company were incorporated into the design. Disc brakes were made available on the Ford Consul for the first time and they sold so well as optional extras that they were made standard by 1961 and all vehicles came with them. Ford also developed and released a convertible version so that people could enjoy the open air on sunny days.

Although the Ford Consul had not been in production for some years the company decided to give the name something of an airing in the 70's when they developed a new version of the Granada that was known as the Ford Consul Granada. This new car was available in a choice of 1996 cc and 2495 cc engines and Ford also developed a very powerful V6 version of the Ford Consul Granada. This car sold very well as it was lighter than the standard Granada and quicker, so it proved an excellent choice for those more interested in performance than ultimate luxury.
