The Ford Consul was a unique iconic vehicle that will be recognised by many. It was created just for the UK market and first launched in the early 1950's. The first version of the Ford Consul was demonstrated to the press and public at the London Motor Show in 1950 and represent an attempt to break into the family saloon car market in a big way by launching a replacement for the V8 Pilot, a vehicle that was popular but that had only been built in very limited numbers. The Ford Consul was one of the most up to date vehicles on the road when it was first introduced, it featured a 1508 cc engine capable of 47 bhp, a three speed synchromesh gearbox and a MacPherson strut front suspension. Inside the fittings and fixtures were very comfortable and many praised how well finished the vehicle was.
In 1956 Ford decided to introduce a new version of the Consul that featured a longer wheelbase, more powerful 1703 cc engine capable of 59 bhp, and a complete interior and exterior redesign. In order to aid aerodynamics the roof profile was actually lowered slightly in the new Mk2 version of the Consol and Ford also incorporated a variety of new technologies such as brand new lights and stainless steel fixtures. Disc brakes were added to the Ford Consul in 1960 and made standard to the vehicle in 1961, and a convertible version was added to the line-up in order to increase the appeal of the Ford Consul. Ford also offered a new deluxe version that featured a two tone colour scheme and more luxurious internal finish for the more discerning motorist. The most recent version of the Ford Consul came in the 1970's when Ford decided to revitalise the brand by introducing the Consul Granada to the public. The Ford Consul Granada featured a choice of 1996 cc or 2495 cc engines in the UK and they also offered a very powerful GT version complete with a V6 engine that could output 138 bhp. The Consul Granada was actually lighter and henceforth quicker than the standard Ford Granada and gained legions of fans who were more interested in performance than anything else. In 1975 Ford decided that the Consul name had run its course and dropped it from the title of the vehicle.
