Between the years of 1961 and 1963 Ford produced and sold the mid sized family vehicle known as the Ford Classic, and this short lived production went on to win a special place in the hearts of many. The Ford Classic was available as both a deluxe version that featured a choice of floor mounted or column mounted gear sticks and also a standard version that was aimed at the more budget conscious buyer. Both editions of the Ford Classic were available as both two and four door versions and a choice of 1340 cc and 1500 cc engines were available across the range. In fact many reference the Ford Classic as one of the first cars produced by the company that offered the now standard plethora of options and extras for the buyer to choose from.
Since Ford intended the Classic to appeal to a slightly more luxurious market their marketing campaign featured things that would often seem bizarre in the modern world; in fact at one stage the Classic was sold by Ford as the "perfect vehicle for the golf club" due to its large boot capacity. Sadly the Classic was out of date by the time it was released as Ford were too busy producing the ever popular Anglia to spend any time on the newer vehicle so it took many years before it saw the light of day. Even though the Classic and Anglia look similar they are in fact very different, the Anglia is much smaller and even though they shared an engine and the newer car was much heavier performance did not suffer as much as you might expect.
Ford also paved the way for a number of new innovations on the Classic; things such as variable speed windscreen wipers and headlight flashers were all innovations first tried with this unique car. To keep the car as reliable as possible Ford opted to utilise various parts from the Anglia; the synchromesh gearbox and the Kent engine were examples of this. By 1963 the Classic was finally discontinued and replaced by the Corsair, however the vehicle had certainly made a mark on the automotive industry because over 100,000 Classics were sold in just two years.
