The Ford Classic was a short lived car produced by Ford between the years of 1961 and 1963 and marketed as a mid sized family vehicle with plenty of space, perfect for the discerning motorist. The Classic was available in a standard edition with two or four doors, and also a two or four door deluxe version that allowed the buyer to choose between floor or column mounted gear sticks. Engine sizes for the Ford Classic ranged from 1340 cc to 1500 cc, and it was actually this vehicle that paved the way for modern Fords and the way that the company offers a huge choice of engine sizes, gearboxes, fixtures, fittings, colours, extras and other features on various vehicles.
The marketing campaign for the Ford Classic was rather unique; since it was aimed at a slightly more luxurious market Ford ensured that potential customers were well aware of the golf bag carrying capacity of the Classic! Sadly the vehicle was mired in development problems and a saturated market; the Anglia was selling so well that all of Fords production lines were busy churning out Anglias so the Classic had to wait a while until it could enter full production. This meant that from the point of view of Ford the car was out of date before it had even entered the market. Despite similarities between the Anglia and the Classic Ford had ensured there were a tremendous number of differences; the new car was longer, wider and much heavier and was outfitted in a more luxurious style. Headlight flashers and variable speed windscreen wipers were also new innovations introduced with the vehicle.
The Ford Classic sold very well to the business end of the market; the exceptionally large size of the boot boosted the appeal of the vehicle to businessmen. In order to keep the mechanical workings of the Classic reliable Ford decided to use parts from the Anglia; the synchromesh gearbox and the Kent engine are two things that were re-used from another vehicle. Despite its extra weight the Ford Classic performed very well on the road and was met with favourable reviews, however its late entry into service meant it would never be produced for long and in 1963 after just two years it was replaced by the Corsair.
