Ford CapriFord Ford Capri (or at least the first true Ford Capri in the sense that we all know) was first introduced on an unsuspecting public at the beginning of 1969. It was born of the idea that there was nothing that equated to a true American pony car for sale in Europe; Ford sought to rectify this and produce a European pony car. From this idea was born the Capri, the final design of which was based around the popular Cortina and built in Belgium, Germany and the UK to be exported to various markets across Europe. Ford were keen to keep the Capri as affordable as possible yet still offer a high performance model in the true spirit of a pony car, to accomplish this they decided to offer a tremendous variety of different types of engine from the V4 1.3 litre for those who were more economically minded through to a 2.0 litre V6 on the Mk1 version of the car. When it was released the Capri was reviewed as an enjoyable car to drive although some reviewers did criticise the handling slightly, something Ford tried to rectify in later versions of the vehicle. By 1970 more than 400,000 Ford Capri cars had been sold and in 1972 the car was overhauled with new suspension, seats, exterior and interior stylings and fittings.

The new Ford Capri Mk2 was launched in 1974 to a public who were now mostly fans of the original vehicle and expected nothing but the best from this new version of what had quickly become a classic. Ford had carefully pitched the Mk2 Capri as not just a pony car but also something more user friendly that could be driven every day. In order to achieve this Ford had altered the design of the vehicle somewhat; the new Capri had a larger cabin allowing for taller individuals to sit comfortably and a hatch back was included at the rear. Most importantly Ford improved the reliability of the Capri and many Mk2 vehicles are still in excellent working order and driving on the roads today. As with the previous version of the vehicle the company offered a choice of engines from a 1.3 V4 to a 3.0 litre V6 for the more power hungry owner!

The Mk3 Ford Capri was the last version that was released to the general public. It featured a variety of changes and tweaks when compared side by side with the earlier Mk2, and it was first offered for sale in 1978. Sadly by this time sales of the Capri were declining but Ford managed to continue producing the vehicle for some years thanks to some changes and clever marketing strategies. The 3.0 S model of the Mk3 Ford Capri is considered by many to be the definitive version of the vehicle, and Ford also introduced the iconic quad headlights that we all recognise and associate with the Capri. In order to continue production of the car the company moved their emphasis to the Uk where the car had growin into a modern classic, and they decided to focus on selling to private individuals rather than selling to large companies who would demand discounts on bulk orders. A 2.8 litre fuel injected engine replaced the outdated 3.0 litre V6 and this allowed the Capri to continue to be produced for Ford for another few years until the last one rolled off the production line in 1986.
