Ford CapriThe first version of the Ford Capri to wear the famous name in its entirety was first launched in January of 1969 and was offered for sale just one month later. The design concept behind the Ford Capri was to introduce into Europe a vehicle similar to how the Mustang worked in North America; a pony car for the EU market. The final design of the Ford Capri that entered service was based on the Cortina and produced in the UK, Belgium and Germany for various markets across Europe. As a pony car the Ford Capri had to perform well but also be affordable; in order to appeal to a large number of buyers Ford offered a tremendous variety of engines, everything from a 1.3 litre V4 through to a 2.0 litre V6 were available to purchase. The Ford Capri was launched to very favourable reviews even though some commented on its road handling being more like an American car than a European one. The Capri proved to be a major success for Ford with 400,000 cars selling by 1970, and in 1972 Ford opted to give the Capri a make-over. They also improved the suspension, changed some design features and replaced the seats with more comfortable versions. A more reliable engine was also added.

In February of 1974 ford launched the brand new Capri Mk2. After the 1973 oil crisis this new Ford Capri was designed to make the vehicle less of a pony car and more approachable for a regular driver. To achieve this Ford added a bigger cabin featuring more head room and replaced the rear with a standard hatch back. The Mk2 version of the Capri was famous for its reliability and many are still running to this day and are much loved by collectors. As with the Mk1 Capri Ford offered a variety of different engines, the smallest was a 1.3 four litre model but a 3.0 litre V6 was also available for those who were not concerned with high fuel prices. The revised body shape of the Mk2 Capri proved to be an instant success and Ford recognised how successful their idea of merging a pony car with a standard vehicle would be. For the sports oriented market the John Player Special edition was launched in 1975 for those who craved even more power and refinement.

The final version of the regular Ford Capri was the Mk3 that offered a variety of subtle upgrades and changes when compared to the Mk2. The first Mk3 Capri's were offered for sale in 1978 but by then it was already too late for the Ford Capri and sales continued to decline gradually. The highly sought after quad headlights were first introduced on the Mk3 version of the Capri, and Ford also upgraded the aerodynamic qualities of the vehicle ensuring that it was as fuel efficient and streamlined as possible, fans of the car note that the 3.0 S model was considered the finest version available. Ford recognised that the Capri had become something of an icon on the UK so decided to focus their marketing efforts there, the company concentrated on selling to individuals rather than to companies so that they could maintain a good profit margin. By 1981 the 3.0 litre V6 engine that powered the Ford Capri was seen as out dated so a newer 2.8 litre fuel injected engine was introduced that offered a boost in power and top speed. This breathed new life into the franchise and allowed the Ford Capri to continue for some time before it was finally discontinued in 1986.
