The legendary Ford Anglia is a vehicle loved and admired by millions across the globe, and throughout its various incarnations it provided many motorists with their first taste of a reliable car. When you examine the vehicles side by side it is easy to see how closely related the Anglia is to two other Ford classics, the Prefect (immortalised by the charachter of the same name in the popular novel The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy) and the Popular. The Ford Anglia was eventually replaced by the modern classic that is the Escort, however by the time it was replaced Ford had sold over 1.5 million Anglia cars had been sold to the public and to companies across the globe. The Anglia was released by Ford in September of 1939 just as Britain was declaring war on Germany and entering World War II, henceforth it was initially only available in one colour and was rather frugal with regards to fixtures and fittings until some time after the war.
All versions of the Ford Anglia were aimed directly at the budget minded driver, despite this Ford still managed to upgrade later versions of the Anglia with more modern instruments, newer gearboxes and also running boards to allow people to enter and exit the vehicle with ease. Originally the Ford Anglia packed a 933 cc straight four engine under the bonnet, however for export releases of the Anglia Ford decided to replace this with the 1172 cc engine lifted straight from the Ten vehicle that was already in production. The export versions sold very well as they were slightly more aerodynamic than the versions released in Britain and were also updated more often as new technologies became available. When the Ford Anglia was first released Britain had just unveiled driving tests so many people took their first ever drive at the wheel of a Ford Anglia.
The most instantly recognisable and celebrated version of the Ford Anglia is the 105E model that was first introduced to the general public towards the end of the 1950's. It was unique amongst the Anglia's in that it was designed from the outset with a uniquely American aesthetic design in mind; although it was slightly slower as it was not tested in a wind tunnel like the British design was it proved to be something of an automotive style icon with an appeal that has lasted to this day. Ford released an estate version in the first half of the 1960's that was a success, and the new refinements and changes introduced throughout the life of the 105E make it the definitive version of the Ford Anglia.
