The legendary Ford Anglia is an icon on the roads both in the US and in Britain and it has gained a legion of fanatic followers worldwide thanks to its important place in the history of the motor vehicle. The Ford Anglia is very closely related to the Prefect and popular, both of which have also become almost cult classics loved by millions and much sought at auction. The Ford Anglia had an incredibly long production run in one guise or another and it was eventually replaced by the much more modern Escort, however when it was finally discontinued a staggering over one and a half million Ford Anglia vehicles had been sold to the general public, an amazing feat for a vehicle launched in war time Britain. The Anglia name actually proved a stroke of genius; the vehicle was launched in the closing stages of 1939 just after Britain had entered World War II and declared war on Germany, and wartime frugality led to it only being available originally with very sparse fittings and one colour.
Eventually as time passed the Ford Anglia was constantly upgraded and updated to make it as modern as possible but Ford always attempted to keep it affordable, the Anglia was always targeted at the driver on a budget and many purchased one as their first car. In fact many peoples first experiences of driving were at the wheel of a Ford Anglia; when the vehicle was released Britain had just introduced mandatory driving tests for anyone aspiring to gain a license and as a result many people took their tests and lessons in an Anglia so purchasing one from Ford was a logical progression. Export versions of the Ford Anglia differed slightly from those released in the UK; the UK version was powered by a 933 cc engine but this was increased to 1172 cc's for the US version, and the export versions were also slightly more aerodynamic and upgraded as they were produced some years after the launch of the original version.
By far the most famous version of the Ford Anglia is the popular 105E version that was first released in 1959. The 105E version of the Ford Anglia differed from older versions released in Britain by featuring large, sweeping American curves and stylings and a very different aesthetic design that actually slowed the vehicle down slightly as it was not tested in a wind tunnel as the British design was. An estate version of the saloon Anglia was released by Ford (pictured above) due to popular demand and the 105E also featured a new engine that was more powerful, compact and reliable than previous models and although the car was by no means blisteringly fast it was certainly much more enjoyable to drive. Recently the Ford Anglia has been imortalised in the Hollywood blockbuster Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets as a flying car.
