The Ford Anglia is a true classic, an icon that has attained a fanatic following of automotive fans across the globe. The classic lines and stylings of the Ford Anglia are closely related to the Prefect and Popular, another pair of vehicles from the Ford stables that have become modern icons. Eventually the Anglia was replaced by the popular Escort, but not after over 1.5 million Anglia's had been sold and were being driven on roads. The Ford Anglia takes its name thanks to a subtle stroke of patriotism from Ford when it was released in early September 1939, just after Britain had declared war in Germany. Originally the Ford Anglia was only available in the standard Ford black colour and the Anglia featured a design representative of its era; it was not radically different from anything else on the road and was aimed at a more budget conscious driver.
Later Ford released upgraded versions of the Anglia featuring better instruments and running boards along the side of the vehicle. The Anglia was powered by a straight 4 933 cc engine that was almost identical to the engine that had been powering Ford's since the early 1930's. For a number of export versions of the Anglia Ford chose to fit a more powerful 1172 cc engine taken from the Ford Ten. These export Anglia versions were also more aerodynamic and featured a number of other small upgrades to the lights and internal fixtures. For many people the Ford Anglia was the first vehicle that they took a driving test in; in the UK the notion of a formal compulsory test had only just been introduced leading many to develop an affection for the Anglia and its subtle nuances and quirks that made it a unique vehicle from the Ford stable. One of the most recognisable models of the Ford Anglia is the 105E version that was first released in 1959.
This version was heavily influenced by American automotive design rather than British and had a much more commanding presence, to this day it remains a design classic loved by millions. Ironically the American approach to aesthetics served to slow the vehicle down slightly; the British styled Anglia versions were designed in a wind tunnel whilst the American ones were designed more for looks than speed. The 105E Anglia proved to be so popular that Ford eventually introduced an estate version of the classic saloon in the early 1960's. Most importantly the new 105E Ford Anglia featured a much needed new engine, and even though the acceleration and top speed were still not incredible it made the vehicle much more competitive and easy to drive. Ford Anglia's have proved to be so well known that many have entered popular culture thanks to appearances on television and in major films such as Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and Never Let Go.
