The Ferrari 360 is perhaps the most iconic Ferrari ever. It graced the streets from 1999 until 2005 and served as a replacement for the popular F355, and it spawned the F430 that has gone on to be arguably just as famous. One of the main features that separated the Ferrari 360 from previous vehicles is that the company teamed up with Alcoa in order to develop a brand new aluminium chassis that managed to be both stiffer and lighter than what was possible with steel and other alloys.
Pininfarina styled the body of the Ferrari 360 and took the vehicle back to the classic, elegant, curving lines that Ferrari were famous for in the 1960's. The V8 engine that powered the 360 was more powerful and larger than what had previously been used, but due to the improved strength, lightness and stiffness of the frame performance was vastly improved. Of the seven versions of the Ferrari 360 just three were road going models, the others were designed just for racing.
The Modena version of the Ferrari 360 came with a choice of manual or electrohydraulic shift gearboxes and first entered production in 1999. The Modena was adapted slightly into the Spider version of the 360, and Ferrari kept almost all of the styling identical so that the specifications were almost identical. A lighter, more tuned and precise version of the Moden was also produced, and this became known as the Ferrari 360 Challenge Stradale. This new version was stripped and refined and over 100 kilograms were shed resulting in a higher performance vehicle. The latest technologies were incorporated into the design including titanium springs, carbon ceramic brakes, and carbon fiber fixtures and fittings.
