There were two distinct versions of the Ferrari 308, the GTB/GTS models and the GT4 version. The GT4 version of the Ferrari 308 was a mid engined vehicle with a 2+2 seating arrangement that was in development from 1973 through to 1980. In order to differentiate the Ferrari 308 GT4 from other non-V12 vehicles (it was powered by a V8 engine) it featured the now famous "Dino" badging for a number of years. In many ways the Ferrari 308 GT4 can be seem as a genre defining car; it revolutionised the layout of the vehicle for the company and proved to be the first of many mid engined V8 powered cars. The GT4 308 was also the first car from Ferrari to feature Bertone styling, a feature that has now become famous amongst Ferrari's. The new styling of the Ferrari 308 GT4 divided opinion; it was very angular and futuristic and a number of journalists appeared to have something of a vendetta against the vehicle. In order to comply with emissions regulations the Ferrari 308 GT4 was detuned in the US to produce 230 hp rather than the 250 hp that the European version developed.

The 308 GTB was developed by Ferrari and introduced in 1975 as a stop gap measure to help boost sales of the often criticised Bertone styled GT4 version. In order to appeal to Ferrari purists the company brought in Leonardo Fioravanti, the designer who had created some of the companies most beloved vehicles in the past. This new 308 GTB stood in stark contrast to the futuristic modernist design of the GT4, and rather than a 2+2 seating layout both the GTB and GTS adopted a standard 2 seat layout. The GTS version was introduced in 1977 and featured a targa top, it became famous thanks to the popular television show Magnum P.I. Once again the US version featured a de-rated engine with fifteen less horsepower than the EU version, however despite this the GTS/GTB versions of the Ferrari 308 sold exceptionally well.
