From 1953 through until 1964 the Ferrari 250 ruled the roads and proved how incredibly successful a long line of related cars could be. There were countless variations of the Ferrari 250 produced and the design is seen as a timeless classic that is much loved by automotive enthusiasts. Early models of the Ferrari 250 made their debut on the race track with a number of vehicles being produced three years prior to the introduction of the street legal road going version. The first version of the 250 was the S berlinetta model that entered the 1952 Mille Miglia and took victory for Ferrari. It competed in many other competitions and although it was often outclassed with regards to speed and power it proved so nimble that it would often win races based on its cornering ability. The Ferrari 250 S utilised a tubular frame that saved weight whilst adding strength. The live axle at the rear and front double wishbones ensured that the Ferrari 250 could handle whatever was thrown at it and the drum brakes ensured that stopping distances were tight. The powerful 3.0 litre engine provided ample power for everyday use and also performance racing.
Thee Ferrari 250 Export and Ferrari 250 Europa were the only two cars in the range that utilised a different engine; these high powered versions used the V12 Lampredi engine that was destined to be used in Formula One make them exceptional track cars. The Export version of the Ferrari 250 utilised much design inspiration from the MM version including the 2,400mm wheelbase, whilst the Europa model was very different in design thanks to a longer 2,800mm wheelbase and a brand new American style body. This car became something of a grand tourer thanks to the extra fixtures and fittings and more spacious interior. The 250 Europa version of this Ferrari is now considered to be an iconic classic, complete with luxury stylings and high quality fittings making for a comfortable ride.
There were many more versions of the Ferrari 250 released throughout the vehicles life but the thing that speaks the most about their superior quality and handling is that none other than Ferruccio Lamborghini owned three of them, a GT coupe, an SWB Berlinetta and a GT 2+2. This actually caused something of a feud between the two companies with Lamborghini complaining directly to Enzo Ferrari about the clutch problems of the 250. Ferrari responded by extoling the virtues of the 250 and insulting Lamborghini before setting out to build Lamborghini beating sports cars. In response Lamborghini hired a number of ex Ferrari engineers to design a new crop of vehicles.
