The Ferrari 212 was a replacement for both the 166 and the 195 series of vehicles and with such an inspiring lineage it is no understatment to say that the vehicle itself had large shoes to fill. The Ferrari 212 actually bared many similarities to the 166 in that it was also a sports car that featured championship winning performance coupled with the ability and comfort to drive it on the road every day for day to day jobs. The chassis design was based more around the earlier 125 with double wishbones and live axles in the front and rear respectively. A number of coachbuilders were involved in the creation of the Ferrari 212 including Carrozzeria Touring, Ghia, Pinin Farina and Vignale.
The styling skills of Farina in particular were highly sought after and his involvement in the Ferrari 212 did much to enhance the allure of the vehicle. The Ferrari 212 itself was available in a number of different versions including the Export and Inter models that featured either 2,500 or 2,600mm wheelbases. All versions of this vehicle featured a 2.6 litre Colombo V12 powerplant that featured a larger bore than what was used on the 166 in order to boost power to 165 hp. Improved cylinder heads on the Export version resulted in five more horsepower being available when compared to the Inter model even though otherwise the engines were identical.
