The Porsche 968 was sold by Porsche from 1992 to 1995 as an entry level model taking over from the popular 944. The 968 actually shared roughly 20% of its parts with its older sibling and is seen as the final model in the gradual evolution of a design that began two decades earlier with the 924 model. The Brembo 4 piston brake calipers, the aluminum trailing arms and front A-arms and the steel structure are parts believed to have been borrwed from the earlier model.

The Porsche 968 also holds the accolade of being the last front engined vehicle from the company before the Cayenne was introduced in 2003, and it was the last sports car with a front mounted engine produced by Porsche to this day, as all front engined Porsches were phased out in 1995. The 968 is an obvious evolution of the 944, itself an evolution of the earlier 924 model, however Porsche decided to use elements from the more luxurious and expensive 928 in an effort to create a sense of commonality amongst Porsches.

Other elements of the 968 were taken from the 911 and the car was given a number of small but noteworth upgrades to things such as tail lamps, the radio antenna, wheel alloys, various colour options on the interior and exterior, new B pillars, new windows with adhesive to make the car more waterproof and a variety of other small things. The Porsche 968 was also popular with those who were not afraid to work on their own cars, due to the interchangability of components many owners of the Porsche 968 opted to buy parts from other models to fit to their new cars as upgrades.
