The 928 was a unique luxurious grand tourer with more of an emphasis placed on comfort than in previous car models produced by the company, it was actually one of the more expensive vehicles produced by Porsche and the 928S version that was released in 1983 held the accolade of being the fastest vehicle on the North American roads. In fact when tested on the Utah Salt Flats in 1986 it actually proved itself to be the fastest production car in the world with a massive top speed of 172 mph. Although initial sales of the Porsche 928 were somewhat slow the vehicle was received well in general by press and the public when it was launched in 1977 at the Geneva Motor Show. When the 928 was offered side by side alongside the Porsche 911 many people gradually began to appreciate the new stylings and luxury design and opted for the more expensive model and to this day the car remains a firm favourite with collectors and enthusiasts. The Porsche 928 actually traces its roots back to 1971 when the design team began a study for the car. The final specifications were very quickly established and it was decided that a rear wheel drive vehicle mated to a front engine specification would allow the machinery such as the transmission and emissions systems to be spread out around the car rather than clustered in one space in the rear. The first engine Porsche opted to use for the 928 was a massive 5.0 litre V8 that was quickly downsized to a 4.5 litre V8 when the fuel crisis of the period reared its ugly head and economy became of paramount importance for the 928.Initially the Porsche 928 originated from the desire to offer a luxury touring car rather than simply adding another sports oriented car to the companies line-up of vehicles. Declining sales of the 911 prompted Porsche into action and the 928 was born. Many believed at the time that the 911 had reached the natural end of its design life and a new approach to car design was required. Porsche Managing Director Ernst Fuhrmann thought long and hard about the problem and decided that whatever the new 928 design should be it absolutely must combine the best attributes of a sports coupe and a luxury sedan, being able to be driven comfortably for long distances yet packed with power and in possession of fine handling so it can be treated like a sports car.
