It was an "entry" model vehicle that appealed to man people who would previously have never considered purchasing a Porsche thanks to its exellect fuel economy (36 mpg) and it's appearance as a "family" car thanks to four full seats fitted inside the low drag sporty chassis. Once again the Porsche 911 was forced to take a back seat to another model, in this case the 912, as it outsold its more expensive sibling when it was first released. Ironically the 912 actually proved to be an excellet source of money allowing the company to further their development and design of the 911 into the iconic car that it is today. The Porsche 912 was actually very popular as a rally car and racing car, with Porsche even going so far as to develop rally kits that including components such as a dead pedal rest and anti-roll bars. The 912 actually scooped the top prize for the European Rally Championship, touring cars in 1967. The origins of the Porsche 912 focus around the discontinuation of the cheaper 356 in 1965 leaving Porsche only selling the costly and spots focused 911. It was decided that a new model was required with a wider market appeal, and from this decision the 912 sprung forth. All efforts were taken by Porsche to keep ever increasing costs under control, these including using the 911 chassis for the 912 but mating it with a smaller engine (sourced from Volkswagen) and removing a lot of the features that came as standard on more expensive models. In its first five years the Porsche 912 sold a tremendous 30,000 vehicles with many police forces around Europe choosing to use them as pursuit cars! The death of the Porsche 912 came with the gradual expansion of the 911 line, when the more affordable "discount" 911T was released Porsche decided that the 912 should be discontinued in 1970. Construction and design techniques had changed massively in the time the 912 was in production enabling Porsche to replace it with the 914, a much cheaper vehicle produced using the most modern of methods. Customer demand soon changed things and Porsche actually re-released the 912 (albeit a newer, modernised E model) to serve as a stop-gap solution when the 914 was discontinued and the 924 was still being developed.
