The Bentley S Type is a unique model of vehicle, throughout its life it was upgraded into a number of versions that are often not seen as simply progressions in a series but as brand new vehicles in their own right. Each vehicle in the S Type class from Bentley represents in the finest in luxury that was available in the year they were launched. The Bentley S Type is also the first vehicle that was produced by both Bentley and Rolls-Royce side by side that were very similar in design and appearence when sold under different names for the two companies. There are three vehicles that played a major role in the history of the Bentley S Type.
The Bentley S1 was released in 1955 and discontinued in 1959. A large 4.9 litre straight six engine was connected to a 4 speed automatic gearbox ensuring that the vehicle was both powerful and easy to drive. A manual gearbox was also made available on the S1 for those who preferred to drive in this manner. Bentley produced two versions of the vehicle, a long wheelbase model and a short wheelbase model, with the former being launched in 1957. It was replaced by the Bentley S2 in 1959, and this version of the class was sold until 1962. The main difference between the two vehicles is that the newer model features a far more modern engine, underneath the bonnet sits a large aluminum V8 that was custom designed for the company and has a large output of 6.2 litres adding greatly to the power of the vehicle and increasing the top speed.
The final vehicle in the series is the popular Bentley S3, this was available for sale from 1962 to 1965. The Bentley S3 was very similar in looks to the S2 but there are a number of differences that can be spotted by the discerning motoring enthusiast. The lowered body provided increased stability and the re-designed grille made it appear both more imposing and more luxurious. Whilst they may have shared some external similarities the interior of the Bentley S3 was very different to the vehicle it replaced, the front now featured true independent seats and leg room was vastly improved in the rear seats making it the pefect luxurious vehicle.
