BentleySType1.jpgThe Bentley S Type is a unique vehicle that is split over three different classes with one vehicle being replaced after a time by a more modern version. From 1955 to 1959 the Bentley S1 graced our roads, it was one of the finest and most luxurious vehicles available to purchase and also represented the first vehicle that was produced by Rolls-Royce and Bentley together and released under both names where both versions had no real differences. History had previously established that when the companies release vehicles together that they can often prove to be quite different even if based on the same concept.

The Bentley S1 featured a 4.9 litre straight six under the bonnet and a 4 speed automatic gearbox that proved somewhat unreliable, as a consequence a 4 speed manual gearbox was introduced as an optional extra in 1957. Bentley produced two versions of the S1, one with a long wheelbase and one with a short wheelbase. A unique coachbuilt version also saw some success in the market. The Bentley S2 replaced the S1 and it was available between 1959 and 1962. The S2 version was based on the Silver Cloud II from Rolls-Royce and Bentley altered the engine in the vehicle, replacing the straight six with a custom 6.2 litre V8.

As a result the Bentley S2 was far faster and far more powerful than it's older sibling and it proved a delight to drive. A variety of S2's were coachbuilt for ultimate luxury from Park Ward, H. J. Mulliner & Co and James Young. The Bentley S3 was the final S Type produced by Bentley and Rolls-Royce and it was available for sale between 1962 and 1965. Whilst it shared a common design aesthetic with the S2 it did feature a number of changes such as a lowered body, sculptured bonnet and a re-designed grille. Inside the two vehicles share little in common with the newer car featuring far more room in both the front and the rear for increased comfort.
