There were three different vehicles belonging to the Bentley S Type. The first vehicle, the Bentley S1, was developed and produced through 1955 to 1959 and represented some of the finest luxury available at the time. It was the first vehicle produced by Rolls-Royce and Bentley that had no real differences, normally the two companies produce vehicles in tandem that can be rather different. The S1 was powered by a 4.9 litre straight six engine that connected to a 4 speed automatic gearbox. A 4 speed manual gearbox was also made available as an option on the Bentley S1 until 1957. Both a short and long wheelbase S1 were produced by Bentley, the longer wheelbase appearing from 1957. Bentley also introduced a unique coachbuilt S1 Continental six months after the vehicle was launched.
The Bentley S2 and S2 Continental were offered for sale between the years of 1959 and 1962. It was based directly on the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud II and one of the main changes between the S2 and the S1 was the straight six engine was replaced with a custom designed aluminium V8 with a capacity of 6.2 litres, this huge increase in power resulted in a much faster and sportier vehicle from the Bentley stable, much to the delight of owners and fans of the company. A large number of these Bentleys were complete with custom designed coachbuilt bodies from designers such as Park Ward, H. J. Mulliner & Co and James Young. The Bentley S3 was the last of this series of vehicle from the company and was produced between 1962 and 1965. It featured very similar looks to the Bentley S2 however there are some subtle differences, notably the new turn indicators, new headlights and lowered body and bonnet with re-designed grille. The interior of the two vehicles was actually very different with the interior of the more modern Bentley S2 featuring individual seats for the front passengers and also vastly increased room in the rear of the vehicle. Many Bentley S3 vehicles were coachbuilt and represented the ultimate in luxury and style for the time in which they were built.
