The R Type Bentley was actually the second model that the company chose to develop after the end of the second world war. The R Type is packed full of features and fittings that seperate it from almost all other vehicles on the road, the Bentley brand is famous for its sublime luxury and this vehicle is no different. The combination of excellence in engineering and absolute luxury refinement have marked the Bentley R Type out as having a special place in history. The company also chose to develop a two door Continental version just for the European market, this holds the accolade of being the most expensive vehicle on the market when it was released.
No matter how expensive the Bentley R Type proved to be it did not stop anyone from purchasing it, 2,500 pre-orders were accepted while the car was still being crafted thanks to the impressive nature of the vehicle itself. Whilst it was still in development it took Bentley some time to settle on the R Type name, initially it was to be known as the Mark VII and after that simply the "7". The R Type followed on from the earlier Mark VI Bentley, and whilst it shared some features others were refined and made much more luxurious, the boot possessed much more space and the engine capacity was increased allowing for faster acceleration and a better top speed.
The straight six 4.6 litre engine was coupled up with a pair of H6 carburettors and the power was output through a four speed manual gearbox, although later in the life of the R TYpe Bentley did offer a four speed automatic version. This vehicle was also one of the first on the market to feature drum brakes along with true independent suspension. When The Motor magazine tested the
Bentley R Type and found that it would reach 101 mph and could reach 60
mph in 13 seconds, impressive figures for such an old vehicle.
