BentleyRType1.jpgThe Bentley R Type holds the accolade of being the second vehicle produced by the company after the end of the second world war. It is packed full of those unique features and subtle touches that make the Bentley brand so special; when you view an R Type you can be sure that you are seeing the epitome of luxury and refinement coupled with a masterclass in skilled engineering. Bentley also developed a special Continental model for the European market that featured two doors rather than four, for a short time it was understood to be the far more expensive vehicle on the market.

This expensive price tag did not put people off, the Bentley R Type sold exceptionally well with the company taking orders for 2,500 cars whilst it was still being developed and to the last those 2,500 people who pre-ordered were all exceptionally pleased with their purchase. Whilst it was being developed Bentley referred to the vehicle as both the Mark VII and the 7 but just before it entered production the company settled on the R Type name to avoid any further potential confusion. Whilst the Bentley R Type looks fairly similar in some respects to the Mark VI there are a number of changes separating the vehicles.

For instance the boot and engine was vastly increased in size on the Bentley R Type making it a much more easy vehicle to live with, and far less were custom built for owners with Bentley preferring a more factory produced approach, embracing the modern construction line. The company did however make the R Type available with a choice of either a four speed auto or four speed manual gearbox. When The Motor magazine tested the Bentley R Type they discovered that it would reach 101 mph and could reach 60 mph in 13 seconds, impressive for a car produced so many years ago.
