The Bentley R Type was the second model
produced after World War II by the company. It encompasses everything
that the Bentley brand is known for such as luxurious refinement and
excellent engineering. Bentley also produced a two door Continental version for the European market and it was was
actually the most expensive vehicle on thee market for its time. The expensive price of the R Type Bentley did not put buyers off at all with 2,500 cars being sold whilst the vehicle was still in production, and 2,500 owners enjoying the most elegant and graceful vehicle on the market.
The R Type Bentley was referred to as both the Mark VII and the 7 throughout the development process, however the R Type name was chosen for this particular Bentley just before it entered mainstream production. It shared many features with the Mark VI that it replaced, however other features such as the boot and engine were increased in size, and less were produced as custom models with Bentley choosing to adopt a more mass produced approach. The R Type featured a straight 6 4.6 litre engine that was connected to a pair of type H6 carburettors. A four speed manual transmission completed the package, and later in the vehicles life Bentley made a four speed automatic option available for purchase.
The R Type featured independent front suspension and leaf springs in the rear, and the drum brakes featured new technology; the front ones were hydraulically operated and the rear driven by a gearbox servo. The Motor magazine tested the Bentley R Type and found that it would reach 101 mph and could reach 60 mph in 13 seconds. Whilst the original version cost £4,481 the limited edition two door Continental cost a massive £7,608.
