The first vehicle that Bentley ventured forth with following the second world war was the Bentley Mark VI, and since it was first released it has entered the history books as an example of how to create a luxurious vehicle for the industry. It is astonishing that it sold so well considering the economic climate following the war, however between the years of 1946 and 1952 the Bentley Mark VI demonstrated the spirit of optimism that was so prevalant throughout the post war years. Incidentally the Bentley Mark VI was also the first vehicle produced by the company utilising factory coachwork (the chassis was still, however, constructed by a coachbuilder), demonstrating how much influence the mass assembly lines that were so common throughout the war influenced car manufacturing.

BentleyMarkVI1.jpgThe chassis design of the Bentley Mark VI actually proved to be so popular that it was used on a number of other vehicles, most notably the Silver Wraith and the Silver Dawn, launched in 1946 and 1949 respectively. The large 4.3 litre straight six engine ensured that the Bentley Mark VI was very powerful for the period in which it was built, and constantly changing technology ensured that a new engine was called for in short order and Bentley obliged, they upgraded the Mark VI with a new 4.6 litre engine to provide extra power. A four speed syncromesh gearbox ensured that the transmission was reliable and sturdy and the Mark VI was packed with technological innovations, such as new independent coil springs in the front suspension.

Another new unique innovation pioneering on the Bentley Mark VI was the use of a central resevoir for the suspension, this allowed the lubricating fluid to be replaced in a very quick time compared to what was previously considered normal. When constructing the Mark VI Bentley utilised the skills of Pressed Steel Ltd in Coventry, from there they took delivery of each vehicle and finished the interior, fitted the fixtures and painted the car. The Bentley Mark VI was one of the first vehicles to be fitted with a sliding sunroof, something seen as standard on even of the most basic vehicles today but a luxury in the 1940's.
