Bentley Mark VI Heavy Duty Waterproof Car Cover
The Bentley Mark VI holds a special place in motoring history as it is the first vehicle produced by the company in the post-war period. From 1946 to 1952 the Bentley Mark VI represented the ultimate in driving luxury and style and set the tone for all of the vehicles that followed from the company. The Bentley Mark VI is also the first vehicle produced by Rolls Royce with factory coachwork but with a chassis that was still constructed by an independent coachbuilder, in fact the chassis design proved so popular that it was used on future vehicles such as the 1946 Silver Wraith and 1949 Silver Dawn.
The Bentley Mark VI was powered by a straight 6 engine with 4.3 litre capacity, and to keep up with the times Bentley introduced a 4.6 litre version in 1951 to provide extra power and speed. Both left and right hand drive versions were produced and all featured a four speed syncromesh manual gearbox. The Bentley Mark VI also featured independent coil springs at the front and traditional leaf springs at the rear, uniquely a control on the steering wheel allowed the driver to alter the tension of the rear suspension. Another unique feature was lubrication of the suspension; a central reservoir could be filled rather than tackling each fitting seperately reducing maintenance time.
The Bentley Mark VI introduced a number of new technologies such as new drum brakes that were linked to the more standard Rolls Royce mechanical servo. The Bentley factory at Crewe painted and finished each Mark VI and installed the interior, however most of the construction took place at Pressed Steel Ltd in Coventry. A sliding sunroof was also installed on the Bentley Mark VI, something of a novelty at the time that has become standard on many cars today. The top speed of 100 mph was very fast for the time and the 0-60 mph speed was equally impressive at 15.0 seconds, especially considering how heavy the Bentley Mark VI actually is.
