The Corniche has an intriguing design history; it was originally implemented by the Rolls-Royce company however it was sold for some time under the Bentley name, and also under the Rolls-Royce name. The Bentley Corniche was a unique luxury vehicle available in both convertible and coupe versions, and its design was based on the Silver Shadow. Between the years of 1971 and 1996 the Bentley Corniche was one of the most luxurious vehicles you could purchase, however to be pedantic only those vehicles up until 1984 are Bentleys as the company then adopted the Continental name for the vehicle.

BentleyCorniche1.jpgThe person responsible for the grandiose look of the Bentley Corniche is none other than John Polwhele Blatchley, his penmanship and attention to detail has resulted in a vehicle that is full of presence and circumstance. The Bentley Corniche went on to shape the designs of various future vehicles from the company for years to come. Even though it is a very large and heavy vehicle the Rolls Royce V8 engine that powers the Bentley Corniche is blessed with a surplus of torque ensuring that when power is needed there is plenty available, and a 3 speed automatic gearbox ensures the vehicle is easy to operate. In 1979 Bentley took the step of expanding the wheelbase of the Corniche, in doing so they increased the room available in the rear seats and increased the amount of luxury even further.

A number of different "marks" of Corniche exist. The Corniche II was strictly a Rolls Royce project that did not involve Bentley, it featured larger redesigned bumpers, a new radiator and oil cooler and anti-lock brakes and other new safety innovations. The Corniche III once again was not a Bentley project but in this version Rolls Royce opted to further improve the safety features of the vehicle as well as redesigning the interior to make it more modern. The final version of the non Bentley Corniche versions is the mark IV, this version featured a new rear class window and a top folding top mechanism, along with CFC free air conditioning and other nods to the environmental movement. There is simply no denying that the Bentley and Rolls Royce Corniche is a stunning vehicle and a truly majestic sight to behold.
