BentleyCorniche1.jpgThe Corniche is an intriguing vehicle with a rather complex history; it was initially developed by Rolls Royce but was offered for sale under both the parent companies name and also as a Bentley. Bentley (and Rolls Royce) offered their Corniche vehicles as both convertibles and standard coupes whilst for sale throughout the years of 1971 through to 1996. Pedantically it is not accurate to call any Corniche developed after 1984 as a Bentley as the company chose to adopt the Continental name from then on whilst Rolls Royce continued to sell the Corniche. Either way it is certainly a famous Bentley and a luxuriously extravagant one at that.

John Polwhele Blatchley is the gentleman responsible for designing the stunning exterior aesthetic of the Bentley Corniche. The vehicle was launched to critical acclaim and when on to be a best seller for the company for many years. Motoring historians also credit the Bentley Corniche as being the vehicle that helped shape the design of Bentleys vehicles for many years into the future thanks to its pioneering style. Underneath the bonnet is a Rolls Royce V8 engine that is possessed with a surplus of power to drive the heavyweight Corniche. Bentley opted to utilise a 3 speed automatic transmission and to address safety concerns about stopping distances they chose to utilise four disk brakes providing lots of stopping power.

In 1986 The Corniche II was launched (which, coincidentally is not technically a Bentley) and it featured a whole host of major upgrades including new bumpers, a redesigned radiator and oil cooler, new anti-lock brakes and a number of safety features. In 1989 the Corniche III was released (again, not a Bentley), air bags and a number of other safety features now come fitted as standard along with a new internal design separating it from previous generations of the Corniche family, Bentley or Rolls Royce.
