The Continental is by far one of the (if not the sole) most famous design that Bentley are recognised for producing. The actual Continental name has been used by a large number of vehicles produced by Bentley over the years, and to avoid confusion this section of our website focuses on those Bentley cars just named Contintenal. Covers for models as the Flying Spur, S Type, R Type and Corniche can also be found in other categories on our site. Perhaps the most famous version of this vehicle that Bentley have produced is the Continental R, a stunningly luxurious vehicle produced between the years of 1991 and 2002.
The Bentley Continental R is significant in autmotive history; it is the first vehicle produced by the company that did not share a design theme with a vehicle produced by Rolls Royce since 1965. The Continental R also holds the accolade of being the most powerful and fastest Bentley on the road for a time, and it is also available as a convertible, known as the Azure. The Continental traces its roots back not directly from Bentley but from the Rolls Royce Project 90 concept that was demonstrated in 1984. It was so well received that it was quickly put into production and in 1991 was ready to be launched to an eager public. The Continental R is seen as one of the most significant vehicles in the history of Bentley and many credit it with making the company familiar to a new generation of car enthusiasts.
One departure from tradition is that modern engineering and manufacturing techniques have enabled the Continental R to be designed with aerodynamics in mind rather than just aesthetics, resulting in a vehicle that is both visually stunning and also easy to drive and very fast. A 325 bhp 6.75 litre engine pushes power through a 4 speed automatic transmission and ventilated disc brakes are provided for extra stopping security. The Continental GT is also a very
famous version of this vehicle. Bentley chose to utilise a unique 6.0
litre turbocharged V12 engine in this 2+2 car, allowing it to almost
reach 200 mph. The GT is also very reliable thanks to it utilising many
components from Volkswagen, and it has found a special place in modern motoring representing a luxurious alternative to many of the stripped out high performance sports cars on the market.
