The Bentley Continental is by far the most famous vehicle produced by the company and certainly one of the most well known vehicles on the road. A large amount of cars produced by Bentley have used the Continental name, however this section is dedicated to those that bear the Bentley Continental moniker and nothing else. If you are looking for the Flying Spur, R Type, S1, S2, S3, and Corniche then fear not, they have been given their own sections on our website. The Continental R is possibly the most famous version of this most prestigious Bentley, it was developed in the late 1980's and offered for sale from 1991 to 2002, it holds a special place in the automotive history books as it is the first vehicle produced by Bentley that did not share a chassis with a model of vehicle developed by Rolls Royce since 1965.
The Continental R also holds the accolade of being the fastest vehicle produced by the company for a short time, and it was also by far the most expensive. Bentley produced the Azure for those requiring a convertible, for all intents and purposes it is a convertible version of the Continental R. The vehicle can trace its roots back to the Rolls Royce concept vehicle known as the "Project 90". It was demonstrated at the Geneva Motor Show in 1984 and was greeting very enthusiastically that it was decided to put a version of it in production. By 1991 Bentley had finished work and were ready to release the Continental to the gathered public and members of the press. The Continental R is often recognised as one of the most forward thinking designs from Bentley thanks to the aerodynamic design and unique aesthetic that it possesses.
The Bentley Continental R is powered by the companies regular 6.75 litre engine that outputs 325 bhp through a 4 speed automatic transmission. Brake fade was addressed by choosing ventilated disc brakes. For customers who required something slightly more sporty Bentley released the 2+2 Continental GT. This vehicle was unveiled in 2004 and featured a 6.0 litre turbocharged V12 and a top speed of 200 mph. As it was built on a Volkswagen platform a number of components are shared with the VW Phaeton, a popular vehicle in its class. The Continental GT also holds the acclaim of being the only vehicle from Bentley capable of using either moden biofuels or traditional petrol.
