The Bentley Continental is a timeless design and the name has been used for a large number of vehicles from the company. We have chosen to seperate out vehicles such as the Flying Spur, R Type, S1, S2, S3, and Corniche and give them their own sections on our website allowing us to concentrate here on those timeless classics that simply bear the Bentley Continental name and nothing else. Of the most famous types of Bentley Continental is the Continental R, this was produced between 1991 and 2002 by Bentley and is of certain historic significance as it was the first vehicle from the company that did not share a body with a similar model produced by Rolls Royce since 1965, and it was also by far the quickest and most powerful Bentley of its day (and most expensive!) The earlier Bentley Azure is a convertible version of the Continental R. The vehicle itself was hinted at in the shape of the Project 90 from Rolls Royce that was unveiled at the 1984 Geneva Motor Show.
This concept car met with such an ecstatic reception that the company decided to put one into production immediately and by 1991 Bentley were ready to unveil the Continental to the public and press. The Bentley Continental R is seen as one of the most progressive designs from the company and it is credited as the car that moved the company forward and made the brand appear to a whole new generation of motorists. It even featured some nods to aerodynamics, the mere thought of which was not considered in Bentleys of old. The Continental featured the standard Bentley 6.75 litre engine and the 325 bhp was output through a 4 speed automatic gearbox. The vehicle also featured ventilated disc brakes on the front pair of wheels in an effort to help curb the effects of brake fade. Bentley also releasted the Continental T that featured a far more sportier setup, increased torque and a slightly modified external design.
In 2004 Bentley released the brand new 2+2 Continental GT to critical acclaim. The 6.0 litre turbocharged V12 engine can propel the vehicle to a top speed of nearly 200 mph and it shares a number of components with the Volkswagen Phaeton. The Continental GT is the first vehicle produced by Bentley that can run on either standard petrol or biofuels, and the company have worked hard to make it feel sportier and easier to drive by tweaking various components. For example the transmission now features a quickshift system that allows gear shifting 50% faster than what was previously acceptable on the Continental. Bentley have also fitted this vehicle with the largest and most powerful brakes ever utilised on a production car offered for sale to the public.
