Aston Martin use the Vantage name to describe a number of different vehicles. A Vantage Aston Martin usually marks the vehicle as a different edition compared to the standard version of the vehicle, usually a higher performance model in the same way that the company use Volante to signify a convertible. The is only one case of Aston Martin producing just a Vantage, this was in 1972 when the straight 6 DBS was named as such to seperate it from the V8 powered version.
Perhaps the most famous Vantage is the V8 version, indeed the two terms have become closely linked by Aston Martin. One of the first V8 Vantage vehicles produced by Aston Martin was created in 1977 and was described by many as "Britain's first Supercar" thanks to its impressive top speed and performance. It was also felt that so many different changes had been made that the Vantage version of the V8 really stood aside as its own vehicle rather than simply being an upgraded version. Aston Martin actually produced a number of "cosmetic vantages" for the US market that lacked the extra power but were designed to look like the newer vehicle.
The next major Vantage model produced by Aston Martin was the Virage, this was first shown in 1992 and proved so popular that it quickly became the only available version of the vehicle. The Virage name was gradually dropped by both customers and Aston Martin themselves until it evolved into the Vantage V8. There are currently two modern versions of the Vantage available from Aston Martin, the V12 and V8. They have been well receieved and are often seen as more affordable versions of vehicles such as the Vanquish S and DBS. There is no doubting that the Aston Martin Vantage name is here to stay.
