The Aston Martin V8 represents a bridge between the more modern designs we see on the road today and the classic designs of the 50's and 60's. It was produced from 1969 and continued to be upgraded and re-designed right through until 1989 when production ceased. The Aston Martin V8 sprang to life based on customer requests; people had been demanding an eight-cylinder engine for many years so the company created a large 2 door saloon vehicle for their V8 engine.
Aston Martin had their plans scuppered when it was discovered that the engine was not ready so they released the vehicle as the DBS complete with a straight 6 engine from the DB6. It took two years but as soon as the new V8 was ready Aston Martin released the vehicle as the DBS V8. Once the straight 6 vantage ended production in 1973 the vehicle was simply referred as the V8 and become the main car in the Aston Martin line-up for almost twenty years. Many consider the styling of the earlier Aston Martin V8 to be taken from the Ford Mustang, it is easy to see why when the vehicle is examined in detail, although despite the aggressive stylings the car is still clearly a refined Aston Martin. The V8 engine that the vehicle takes its name from is a fuel injected 5.3 litre that produces an estimated 315 bhp and pushed the car to a top speed of 160 mph. Aston Martin produced the V8 through various changes and iterations, the first of which was the series 2.
These were produced from 1972 to 1973 and marked the change from the DBS V8 to plain V8. Series 3 vehicles incorporated various tweaks and fixes but despite the best intentions of Aston Martin they suffered from new emissions regulations so had their engines de-tuned. Series 3 production continued until the end of 1978. Series 4 vehicles were equipped with a 3 speed automatic transmission and a unique wooden trim, and were in production until 1985. Finally the series 5 Aston Martin V8 was introduced in 1986 witha number of aesthetic and engineering tweaks that modernised the vehicle. The Aston Martin V8 featured in the James Bond Film The Living Daylights and contains many "optional" extras such as lasers, missiles, spiked tyres and skis.
