astonmartinv81.jpgThe Aston Martin V8 vehicle is seen as a car in the companies line-up that bridges the gap between the more modern and contemporary vehicles such as the DB7 and DB9 and the classic vehicles that graced the roads in the 50's and 60's such as the DB5 and DB6. The Aston Martin V8 proved to be such a commercial success and such a unique adaptable vehicle that it had the longest production run of any Aston Martin; the V8 was in production for 20 years from 1969 until 1989 in various guises. It was actually initially created based on custom demand; customers were demanding a more powerful engine from the existing DBS so a V8 engine was added and the rest, as they say, is history, especially when the company decided to create a larger 2 door saloon for the bigger engine.

Originally the DBS from Aston Martin was powered by a standard straight six engine taken directly from the DB6. Unfortunately delays in their V8 engine meant that it actually took two years until the Aston Martin V8 was actually launched properly, and it was marketed as a DBS V8. It was not until the production of the final straight six powered Vantage production ended in 1973 that Aston Martin began to drop the DBS moniker and sell the car just as the V8. It is easy to see that there are hints of Ford Mustang in this particular Aston Martin and even though the vehicle is clearly more aggressive than previous designs it is certainly an Aston Martin. The 5.3 litre engine produces 315 bhp and allows the car to reach 160 mph.

Series 2 of the Aston Martin V8 was produced between 1972 and 1973 and encompassed the name change and a few other minor modifications. Series 3 cars of the V8 type featured a number of small alterations but many had their engines de-tuned to meet new emissions guidelines. The series 3 from Aston Martin ran until 1978 to be replaced by the series 4 that allowed a choice of gearboxes (including an automatic transmission) and a wooden trim. The last series of Aston Martin V8 was series 5 that incorporated a number of stylistic changes and engineering alterations that modernised the car. Like many Aston Martin's the V8 featured in a Bond film, in this case The Living Daylights.
