 The Lagonda was produced by Aston Martin between 1976 and 1989 and is something of a one-off in the line-up of Aston Martin vehicles, as a luxurious four door saloon car the Lagonda stands apart from the usual sports coupe and convertible vehicles produced by the company. In the mid 1970's Aston Martin was facing crippling financial difficulties and at one stage were looking at closing their business for good, however in an effort to raise funds they took the step of designing something unique and different.
The Lagonda was the result and it proved an immediate success for Aston Martin with a large number of orders flooding in immediately allowing the company to commence work on other projects. The esteemed William Towns designed the Aston Martin Lagonda, to this day the styling and shape of the vehicle divides opinion with many thinking it is visually striking and elegant and others finding it visually unappealing. One of the things that made the Aston Martin Lagonda so acclaimed is that apart from a few other vehicles from the likes of Rolls Royce and Bentley it was one of the most expensive vehicles on the road, full of incredible high-tech gadgets and luxurious fixtures and fittings.
As a technological milestone the Aston Martin Lagonda has no equal; it was the first time a fully digital instrument display and computer management system were used and even though the CMS proved troublesome it paved the way for the vehicles we drive today. The vehicle proved so popular that Aston Martin actually updated the Lagonda in the mid 1980's with cathode ray tubes replacing the already futuristic LED display. Despite the fact that it suffered from relatively poor performance the Aston Martin Lagonda has entered the history books as a unique and intriguing design that helped create and develop many of the technological innovations that we now take for granted.
