The Aston Martin DB9 is a grand tourer that was first introduced in 2004 and represents the first vehicle from the company to be manufactured at their new Gaydon facility. It was designed to directly replace the now defunct Aston Martin DB7 and although it shares some similar design features it represents a completely new vehicle with new technologies, manufacturing techniques and aesthetics setting it aside from older vehicles. The DB9 is produced in two different versions, a coupe and Volante (convertible), both of which are powered by the same 6.0 litre V12 470 bhp engine (the same engine that powers the V12 Vanquish).
Aston Martin believed the car was such a radical step forward in terms of design and technology that they skipped the DB8 moniker and went straight to DB9 to signify the great leap that has occurred with the new vehicle. The company also increased production so that they could rival other similarly priced cars such as the Ferrari F430 and the Porsche 911 Turbo. Despite past financial issues the Aston Martin DB9 has been designed to see the company well into the 21st century. In 2006 a unique "sports pack" was released for the DB9 that tweaks various things such as stiffness, wheel weight, springs and damper rates making the ride sportier and more responsive. Aston Martin hand build the Volante version of the vehicle and it has proved popular with the public even though it is slightly slower due to its nature as a soft top vehicle.
In 2008 Aston Martin announced that all versions of the DB9 would receive a "face lift" that would tweak the engine, alter the styling of the centre console to closely match the new DBS and improve the start-up procedure replacing the traditional method with the new "Emotional Control Unit". Prodrive have also adopted the Aston Martin DB9 for racing, and while it retains the 6.0 litre V12 engine its weight has been drastically reduced and performance increased. It is known as the DBR9 and won its first race at the 12 Hours Of Sebring in 2005, along with the Le Mans, American Le Mans, FIA GT and 24 Hours of Le Mans. From the DBR9 the DBRS9 was developed, this vehicle runs in the GT3 category and takes part in smaller categories.
