astonmartindb61.jpgWhilst the DB6 can initially look very similar to the vehicle it replaced (the DB5) Aston Martin actually had made a large number of changes in their new vehicle, mostly related to aerodynamics and various fixtures and fittings. From 1965 to 1970 the Aston Martin DB6 led the companies line-up of luxurious sports cars and it also marks the first time a vehicle was developed from scratch with no external assistance in many aspects of the cars design. Aston Martin also utilised wind tunnel testing in the creation of the DB6, this was one of the first times such a technique had been used in the creation of motor vehicles and proved to be useful as it helped the developers fix a number of aerodynamic problems.

The press and public eagerly awaited the launch of the Aston Martin DB6 and it was released officially at the London Motor Show in 1965, and was the first vehicle produced at Aston's Newport Pagnell facility. The changes from the DB5 to the DB6 are many; from the raised roof line to the lengthier body (for extra leg room) through to the split bumpers and power steering and air conditioning all help seperate the two vehicles even though they look very similar. The DB6 as produced by Aston Martin updates a successful design and builds on the groundwork established by the DB5.

Two very different engineering techniques were used in the construction of the DB6 and DB5, Aston Martin chose to use a body-on-frame technique that was relatively new at the time to create a stronger, stiffer vehicle that benefited from the increased rigidity. For power Aston Martin chose to offer a maximum of 282 bhp from the engine, however they did later release a Vantage version of the vehicle that boosted this to 325 bhp. The DB6 also marks the first time that Aston Martin chose to use the name "Volante" to mark the convertible model in a series. Later versions of this vehicle featured a whole host of technological innovations including electronic fuel injection.
