The Aston Martin 2-Litre Sports (more
commonly referred to as the DB1) is one of the most famous vehicles
produced by the company as it was the first to be developed under
director David Brown (hence the DB1 moniker adopted for various
vehicles in the Aston Martin line-up). The DB1 was sold from 1948 to
1950 and in this short production run it left a permanent impression on
the minds of many motorists even though there were only 15 models sold.
The Aston Martin DB1 was based on the older Atom project, a vehicle
developed during World War II constructed with a tube-frame chassis and
a 2.0 litre four cylinder engine.
One of David Brown's first decisions
when he became the new director of Aston Martin was to begin work on an
updated version of the Atom. The prototype vehicle took victory at a 24
hour race at Spa in 1948, an amazing feat considering it was only
entered to test the durability and reliability of the vehicle! From
then on the DB1 was referred to as the "Spa" car and it was
demonstrated at the London Motor Show as such and advertised as being
for public sale. The public rejected the notion and no-one was
interested in purchasing the Aston Martin Spa car (which incidentally now resides in
the UK in a fully restored condition). David Brown prompted Aston
Martin to develop the DB1 as a two seat roadster based on the Spa car
design but with more conventional bodywork and fittings.
This new
"2-Litre Sports" (which would become the DB1) was shown to critical
acclaim at the next London Motor Show. The engine could propel the
vehicle to 93 mph thanks to the 90 hp produced by the 2.0 litre engine
making the vehicle something of a landmark. It was only when Aston
Martin introduced the DB2 in 1950 when the "2.0 Litre Sports" became
officially known as the DB1. Even though only 12 models were produced
it firmly cemented the reputation of Aston Martin in the annals of
history and was the car the marked the beginning of a long and
prestigious legacy.
