The Aston Martin 2-Litre Sports is the vehicle that gradually evolved into what we now know as the DB1 over a period of years as the company began to grow and establish their presence in the market. What we refer to as the Aston Martin DB1 was first developed by new director David Brown, the man who lends his initials to the name of almost all Aston Martin models. The company offered the DB1 for sale between the years of 1948 and 1950 and even though only a very small number of units were eventually sold as the first "DB" model car from this most famous of companies there is no denying that the DB1 holds a special place in the history of motoring.
David Brown decided that he wanted to make an impression when he first joined Aston Martin and one of his first moves was to overhaul and update the older "Atom" project. This World War II era vehicle was a tubular framed chassis based vehicle powered by a standard 2.0 litre engine. He made the risky decision of entering the prototype vehicle in the Spa 24 hour rally in 1948 and it came in first place, an excellent achievement for a prototype that was only entered into the race to discover how durable the vehicle actually was. The DB1 was developed by Aston Martin from this vehicle albeit with slightly more conventional aesthetics and standard fittings.
The Aston Martin DB1 was shown off to the public and press at the London Motor Show. Unfortunately it did not prove to be an immediate success and even though it appeared to be well received not many orders were placed. For the time the Aston Martin DB1 was actually a very fast vehicle, the 2.0 litre engine was capable of pushing the car to 93 mph and as the first DB series vehicle there is no doubt that the Aston Martin DB1 played a vital role in establishing the company and bringing them into the limelight.
